The New Era Manchester Derby: Will New Brooms Sweep Clean?
Latest Betting Previews from Ladbrokes. There’s a lot more than pride at stake at Old Trafford on Sunday as Manchester City continue their efforts to gatecrash the top four. Ladbrokes will have all the latest betting odds for this New vs Old Derby!
The new City mean business. But so do the old United.
It’s not often Manchester City roll into Old Trafford as anything other than meat for the cannon, as they’ve only won once there in 25 league games since Denis Law’s famous backheel in 1974. This season, however, the form book doesn’t apply, as freshly wealthy City have stopped being a charitable point-dispensing institution and are warming to the role of bullies. But how long can it last?
Old Trafford can be less fortress-like early in the season
* United have been beaten three times at home within the first half dozen games of the season since 2002/3 (the year City returned to the Premier League). Bolton (2002/2), Blackburn (2005/6) and Arsenal (2006/7) all recorded early season wins there.

And last year United were weak against big teams
* The Red Devils only won one of their six games against the Big Four last season.
But City don’t have any previous form at building on good starts
* City have never started with four wins out of four in the Premier League era, but in the three seasons when they’ve won three and drawn one, they’ve never won game five (2001/2, 2005/6 and 2007/8).
And they’re badly short of firepower
* Not only has Adebayor been ordered to sulk in the stands for a few games, but Robinho, Santa Cruz, Benjani and probably Tevez will be keeping him company with their various injuries. Over to you, Craig Bellamy.
So perhaps history will repeat itself…
* The last time City and United met at Old Trafford early in the season with both sides in the top four (Sept 10, 2005, United were fourth, City second) the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
